What Causes Pain In Palms Of The Hands?

Hello, the palms of my hands have been red for a few years now, but now they are very painful. I am finding that the pain in them wakens me up at night (after maybe only 2 - 3 hours sleep) and I can't get back to sleep for hours. I have spoken to my doctor and she said it may be some type of athritis.
