What Causes Pain In Lower Back Radiating Down The Thighs?

I have had lower back pain for over a year now. It gets worse walking, exercising, standing, but the pain disappears when I sit down on a hard chair for a minute or two and then I can wlak for about 10 minutes without pain. Lately, The pain seems to radiate down my hips, around toward the front of my lower body into the hips and down the outside of both legs, primarily the left. I have been to many doctors who all say I should do more and mre physical therapy. I do what they say, but am seriously getting tired of fighting this pain. Doctors say I have a slightly distended lower spine problem, but that it should ese with exercise. Help. Their advice is not working and yes I have had an MRI It showed nothing serious, just the one slightly distended disk. I am 67 years old and not many people can tell I am in pain. I also gained a lot of weight 35 lbs in the last year due to the meds I am on due to early stage Parkinson s. What do you recommend I do about this pain?

Dear Emmet,
This is Dr.S.Tomar from Healthcaremagic.com's medical team and I will be your medical Advisor for this question.
Your increased weight has caused extra load on your spine and is the cause of your distended disc . I would suggest you following:
1. Don't bend forwards
2. don't lift weights
3. try to decrease your weight with lifestyle modifications which will make the physical therapy more effective
4. Take your physical therapy sessions regularly at some good clinic under guidance of expert physiotherapist .
5 You can use pain medicines like motrin for temporary relief as prescribed by your PCP.
6. Learn back exercises from your physiotherapist to make your back muscles strong.
7. Follow a strict diet , for this you can consult with dietitian .
8. corticosteroid injections are also useful in decreasing the inflammation around nerve roots.
9. Decreasing the weight will help you a lot so focus on it .
Most of the mild to moderate cases like yours become better gradually with in 8 weeks , Follow these instructions carefully .
Best Regards ,
DR.S.TOMAR

I wish you good health.
Best Regards,
