What Causes Pain From The Shoulders To The Fingers?
Hi, Dr. Ryne. I am 61 years old, female and weigh 145 lbs. Recently I have had pains like an electric shock going from my shoulder to my fingers on my right side. It feels like a bolt of electricity is going through my arm. My chest is not involved. The pain is very intense (8 on a 10 point scale) but momentary. It is enough to disrupt what I am doing (such as typing on the computer) and then it goes away. What do you think it is and what should I do? Edith Reese
It is possible that the pain maybe related to the nerves in the area. This is called neuropathy.
This refers to abnormal function of the nerves. It can be temporary or permanent and there are different possible causes such as: (1) diabetes (2)trauma eg arthritis of the neck or shoulder (3) liver or kidney disease (4)side effect of medication (5)low levels of vitamin b12 or folate (6)abnormal levels of vitamin b6 (7)infection such as shingles (8)thyroid disease
It would be best, if it continues, to see your doctor for an assessment which would include physical examination as well as blood tests and imaging.
I hope this helps
