What Causes Pain Below Rib Cage During Pregnancy?

I m 34 weeks pregnant and pain in my left side below my rib cage and above my hip, kinda belly button level, I have a sharp pain. If I rub the area where the pain is, it sends a pain through my lower stomach. The pain has been going on for 3 days now. Should I be concerned?

Hello and thank you for the question.

This pain that you are describing, in terms of its quality and location, is most likely related to gas in your bowels and/or constipation. This is very common in pregnancy as constipation is common because your bowels are working much more slowly. This pain is often poorly localized and seems to move around a bit. There is not much else on the left side except for the side of the uterus and the left ovary. It would not be unreasonable to have an ultrasound to evaluate the pregnancy and the left ovary. If these are both normal then I am probably correct. Many women benefit from stool softeners and medication that contains simethicone (such as Gas-X).

I hope that this helps and good luck!
