What Causes Pain And Swelling Of Toe?

I have a severly sore 2nd toe on my left foot. I originally thought that is was an ingrown nail, and cut down the side to relieve the nail pain. It felt better for 3/4 days and the soreness started again. Over the last couple of months it has gotten worse. No redness, just a little swelling. What could this be and how can I ease the pain?

Hi,
As you are saying that your pain got relived with cutting the nail and occured again as the nail grows, it is most likely due to ingrown toe nail. This is a condition associated with wrong practise of cutting nail and manipulating the lateral part of nail. You need to show a dermatologist as ingrown toe nail can cause pyonychia (Pus collection in lateral nail folds) which has to be taken care of with oral antibiotics. You may need a partial of complete nail excision according to the severity of your condition. Do not use ill fitted shoes as it aggravates recurrences.
I hope this will be helpful to you.
