What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Area Of Wisdom Teeth?

Two days ago, The area behind my molar on my lower left jaw (where wisdom teeth usually are) had a mild pain, I didn't think much of it. The next day I woke up and it was swollen and hurt to swallow. I went to the dentist, they took x-rays and couldn't find anything so prescribed me some Tylenol 3's and amoxicillin. Today I woke up and I can barely open my mouth at all. What should I do? Have any idea as to what this could be? I will note that I only had 3 wisdom teeth (which were taken out 5 months ago) and this was the side I didn't have one.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that pain and swelling in the wisdom tooth area and difficulty in opening the mouth is most probably due to inflammation of the gum flap in the area leading to Pericoronitis...

Other cause can be that there might be impacted tooth that is present in a disoriented position and it is putting pressure over the roots of adjacent tooth leading to the following symptoms..

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and x ray by changing the angulation can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

As of now continue taking antibiotics and along with tylenol you should also take Ibuprofen and serratiopeptidases.
Do cool compresses over the cheek to reduce swelling..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
