What Causes Pain And Swelling In Face After Tooth Extraction?

Hello, I had my 2 bottom wisdom teeth extracted 4 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago I had to go back to my surgeon because I sharp pain and inflation on right side of my face and my doctor drained infection out of it and prescribed me 21 capsule of Amoxicillin for 7 days, I have a strange numbness in my right side, I bit my cheek and i almost did not feel pain. Next week I had to go back because while I was taking the antibiotics I started to feel pain on my other side and again he drained infection out of it and gave me another course of antibiotics. but after a few days pain and inflation did not go away and even my right side is sore, painful and a bit numb too. Is it normal? Is there a good chance something had gone wrong during the surgery that causes repetitive infections? and what should I do at this point? Do I need to change my doctor? because he does not seem to care much. I have to add that I did take very good care after surgury, I brush my teeth right after whatever I eat and rinse it with anti bacterial mouth wash and warm salt water and irrigate the extraction site with mouthwash they gave me and there is nothing else I could do to make sure the site is clean.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your query it seems that you have a post operative infection leading to pain and swelling otherwise the pain and swelling mostly goes away in a weeks time and at times even in less time..

It is possible that there may be some food debris got inside the extraction socket and your gargles with mouth rinses are not able to remove it and it is creating a constant source of infection and until it is not removed the infection and pain does not go away..

Other thing is that there is a nerve in very close location of the roots of lower wisdom teeth known as INFERIOR ALVEOLAR NERVE or INFERIOR DENTAL NERVE and many a times during extraction of wisdom tooth this nerve gets damaged leading to numbness.
This damage may be reversible or irreversible.

I would suggest you to consult an ORAL and MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON as he is the best dental specialist who can do a thorough clinical evaluation and find out the exact cause of pain and swelling and do the treatment needed.

Since it is already 4 weeks you should consult soon as persistent infections can lead to cellulitis and further complicate the condition..
"SO PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE"

HOPE YOUR QUERY IS SOLVED..

Thanks and regards..
