What Causes Pain And Stiffness In The Lower Back?

I am 62 and suffer from time to time with stiff lower back pain. Sometimes when it is worse I take diclofenac and I do get relief, then after a few days it comes back again, especially if I do too much vacumming or similar. Also, sometimes I wake up with one or both sore hips. Not sure if this would be related, what do you think

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read your message carefully and understood your medical concern.

I came across this information:

- age 62
- lower back pain and stiffness
- diclofenac helps
- comes back after too much vacuuming or something similar

Back pain and stiffness are quite common in people over the 60. The main causes are degenerating processes of spinal vertebral discs and osteoporosis.

Dclofenac is an anti-inflammatory drug that helps in reducing the inflammatory process and by this way it relieves the pain. When exposed to special triggers of pain or inflammation the pain re-starts.

Stiffed legs and back in the morning are usual in this situation of spinal or low back joints damage.

My advice is that you must consult a rheumatologist and run spinal X-ray. Specific tests for rheumatoid arthritis may be necessary as well as bone densitometry.

Apart anti-inflammatories like diclophenac, physiotherapy can also help after evaluating his current status of vertebral spine.

I hope this was helpful for you.
