What Causes Pain And Numbness On The Xiphoid Process During Pregnancy?

My doctors don t seem to think it s an issue but it s extremely painful. I am pregnant in my third trimester I m right at 30 weeks. I m a nursing student so I know little but not a lot. My xiphoid process began swelling about a month ago and it continues to get bigger it s now the size of a small egg and hurts to touch it or anywhere around it you can rub your hand across the base of my sternum and feel it without applying pressure. The are around it is tingly and numb feeling I m not sure what it is but I know it doesn t feel good and it s not normal for me.

Hello ma'am and welcome.

At your 30 th week, your uterus has grown and raised almost to the level of your xiphoid process putting pressure not only on the sternum but also on the diaphragm which in turn can result in pain and pressure on the xiphoid process causing it to bulge.

Do not worry about it, I understand it is painful ma'am, but as your uterus grows this issue is going to persist until delivery.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
