What Causes Pain And Discoloration On The Feet?

My son has been experiencing pain in his foot on and off for a couple of weeks. At first we thought it was due to a new pair of work boots, so he bought some inserts with better arch support. He has had a fair amount of pain near the ball of his foot, and some discoloration (again, we though it may be dye from the new boots and new socks). I thought perhaps of plantar fasciitis as well. Tonight he called me and said his foot appears swollen. I am worried now that something more serious is going on, and we plan to go to an immediate care place tomorrow. I m just wondering what this could be.
