What Causes Numbness Of Fingers And Constipation After Total Thyroidectomy?
hi. i had a total thyroidectomy two moths ago. my feet and legs had been swollen and i had gained 20 lbs before the surgery. i lost 16 lbs and the water retention is not as bad as it was before the surgery, however, the inside of my fingers are very numb, i am not sleeping well, and i am still constipated,( all these symptoms i had before the surgery. i am on 224 mcg of synthroid since after the surgery. doc says my counts are norman, although b-12 is very low, 2.01. if my thyroid tests are normal why do i feel miserable? by the way i had been on synthroid for 20 years before the surgery

Good Day! I have reviewed your concerns regarding your symptoms. After a total thyroidectomy, a patient may have symptoms, of HYPOthyroidism, which means you lack thyroid hormones, symptoms include swelling, constipation, numbness, easy fatigabilty, weight gain, etc. Your symptom of numbness in your fingers could also mean calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia), which can be temporary effect of total thyroidectomy. I suggest a repeat thyroid function test and serum calcium, whether additional medication is needed. Plus medications for your vitamin B-12 problem.
