What Causes Numbness And Tingling Sensation On The Left Side Of The Body?

My brother is experiencing numbness and tingling and neuropathy on his left side. His foot turns when he stands up and he has to pick up his leg with hand to move it. Last night he had what appeared to be a severe muscle spasm on his left side that started with his foot and moved up his body. He went to the ER last night and had an MRI. It showed 2 bulging discs, but it does not seem like his symptoms would be this severe based on his MRI.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
The symptoms could be caused by a neuropathy like MS from the MRI result.I feel the 2 bulging discs may explain the symptoms if found in the brain.I will suggest you see a Neurologist for evaluation.Other medical conditions may also give such symptoms. Some possible causes may include:
-Peripheral neuropathy
-Stroke
-Diabetic neuropathy
-Ionic imbalances like low calcium, low magnesium...
-Vitamin B12 deficiency
-Liver and kidney pathologies
I will suggest you see a Neurologist for evaluation.Other tests that may be requested may include: serum electrolytes, full blood count, fasting blood sugar, vitamin levels, liver and kidney function tests, ECG.
In the meantime, i will suggest you try the following:
*Rest well
*Remain active
*Eat well and healthy with enough green vegetables
Your Doctor will take care of the rest and if need be, the services of a Physiotherapist may be hired.
Hope this will help
Best regards
