What Causes Numbness And Blotchy Areas On Tongue After Eating Cold Foods?

after eating/drinking cold things (and not everytime) my tongue will feel numb, tingly and when i go look in the mirror it is turning white (sometimes blotchy areas-front and in severe attack the entire tongue is whitish grey)...usually lasts a minute or more, and then disappears, and returns to semi-normal (hurts, bright red, tingles) what is this? its been happening off and on for 5 years. i am a 34 female. 5'10 and 155lbs. i have lost a lot of weight over the years thinking it was a food allergy, scared to eat! relatively healthy and active.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms and as the symptoms appears only by eating specific cold foods then there is a possibility that you have an allergic reaction to certain food items and the symptoms like numbness, tingling and blotches over the tongue..
You should consult an oral physician and get evaluated and along with it get an allergic testing done by getting a blood investigation done..
If you keep a track of the foods that you took every time that caused the symptoms and along with it get an allergic testing done you will definitely be able to rule out the specific food item that is causing allergic reaction..

The best way to prevent the recurrence of such symptoms is to prevent exposure to the allergen..
In case if the allergic attack occurs taking anti-allergic medicines like diphenhydramine [benadryl or fexofenadine [allegra] can help..
In severe reaction steroids can also be advised..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
