What Causes No Periods For 3 Months And Negative Pregnancy Test In RA Patient?

Hello doctor-- I am 21 years old, and married. Ive have rhematoid arthritis since I was 15, but am only on 800mg of advil twice a day currently. My period has never been the most regular, but I ve never been more then a few days to a week late. I have not had my period in over three months now, and an at home pregnancy tests show up as negative. Is this common with JRA? We are also worried about infertility.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

I've cared for a few women who were pregnant and had JRA. I want to reassure you that RA alone should not interfere with your ability to get pregnant or have a healthy baby, in fact, your arthritis will generally improve. If you have any other autoantibodies related to lupus or another autoimmune disorder that situation could be different.

Your irregular periods, if they have been a lifelong problem, should be evaluated by a gynecologist. They can do hormone tests to make sure you do not have any medical problems that can affect your cycle.

In the meantime, it doesn't necessarily mean that you are infertile if you don't have regular periods. If your tests continue to be negative and you do not menstruate for 6 months I would also recommend evaluation by a doctor.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question and that this information was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
