What Causes Neck And Tongue Syndrome And What Is The Treatment?

Hi, i regularly play netball and am quite fit. every now and then i will turn my head to the left and it will kink , causing great pain to the top left side of my neck, making my tongue go numb and tingly only on the left side and the whole left side of my head is very painful. my eyes black out for a minute and i cant speak until the pain goes away. it happened last night and i stood there for about a minute with my eyes closed then it went away. i am a bit sore today though as this is the worst i have done it. i had a look on the internet and read alot about neck-tongue syndrome. is this rare? how is it caused/treated? and who is the best person to see for diagnosing this? i am booked in with the physio this afternoon.. i have slight scoliosis and sometimes have trouble with my sciatic nerve cause pain in my glutes and feet. sometimes when i sit in the car i find myself quite uncomfortable with a painful tingling sensation in my left shoulder blade at the back and in my neck. my hips can pop in and out also which i read may be related. any information would be very helpful thank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,
I understand your concern.
* The acute twist of neck while playing had resulted in a sharp in the base of skull & 1st cervical vertebra- causing nerve compression ( supplying left part of tongue) resulted in numbness & pain in tongue & pain in neck.
* It's clear from your detailed history you have spondelitis of complete vertebral column, giving you symptoms all over the body.
Overall management consists of -
- Pain killers as per need.( minimum possible)
- Regular physiotherapy as per instructions of a physiotherapist.
-Calcium & vitamin D supplements.
- avoiding bending, weight lifting, hasty body movements, jerks/kinks to body.
- Weight reduction.
Thanks.
