What Causes Nausea After Hitting The Head?

Hi
I got hit on the top left side of my head earlier by a wood cabinet door that fell off the hinges. It hurt but not badly. No bleeding no bump. No headache I can just feel where the Door hit me. I ate lunch and almost immediately felt nausea. The rest of the day I have been having off & on nausea. No one else that ate same food felt sick. What else should I watch for to know If it is related to the head bump?

Hello. Thanks for asking form HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that you are having no headache, wound or bruise at injury site and you are conscious, oriented.

The nausea could be due to

: Head injury - Nausea with head injury usually occurs with headache, presents with sudden vomiting, may be associated with impaired consciousness/confusion and there will be no abdominal pain/burning/abdominal cramps/loose motions/constipation/not related to food.

Occurrence of vomiting due to head injury is a sign of dangerous head injury. It must be evaluated by clinical examination of patient by doctor and CT head to rule out fracture or bleed in brain. Fracture is usually managed conservatively while bleed may require surgery.

: Nausea due to abdominal disease - It is usually associated with abdominal pain or burning or cramps or loose motion or bad taste in mouth or tenderness in abdomen. There will no headache. It can occur because of reflux/gastritis/food poisoning/enteritis.

It can be managed by
; Avoiding fatty and spicy food
; Taking combination of Pantoprazole-Domperidone after proper prescription
; Sometimes antibiotic therapy like Ofloxacin-Ornidazole is given to treat infection.

You can correlate your features and reach upto some conclusion. Accordingly you can take treatment and consult doctor.

Hope it will help you. Thanks.

Take care.

Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Deepak Verma's  Response
Hi there,
I am Dr. Deepak, I work in Emergency Department, where I see many patients with injury to their head. As you mentioned you had injured your head as a wooden cabinet door that fell off the hinges. You have been having nauseated feeling since then.
I feel you had sustained minor injury to your head, I can say that as
1. You didn't had any dizzy feeling and blurring of vision.
2. You didn't had vomiting even though you had nausea.
3. You didn't loose consciousness.
4. You are not feeling any numbness or weakness of any one side of your body
5. You are not having any bluish discoloration around your eyes and behind the ear
6. You are not having any trouble with walking.
And the most important thing is you are pretty much okay right now.
If you face any of the above mentioned problem within 24-48 hrs, then you can show to the Doctor, who can examine you.
For the time being you can apply some ice pack over the injury area, take some vomiting medication, as you need to eat something other wise you will feel weak, and take rest for some time.
If you have vomiting even after taking medication then you need to show a Doctor.
Thank you
Hope your concern was dealt with and hope you have a speedy recovery.
