What Causes Muscle Spasms In The Calf?

On several occasions I have awakened with a sore calf muscle as if I had had a Charlie horse . But had not . I drove a few days ago for the first time in a few weeks . About a 30 min drive . Could that be why my calf muscle is so sore . ( right , the one I use in driving ) it will last a few days then go away m . Has done this a couple of times before !

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry to hear that.

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

1. The reason for your muscle spasms in the calf could be stress to your muscle (for a long drive).
Treatment could be either massaging or stretching the foot, ankle or knee in the opposite direction of the spasm could relief pain.

2. Low potassium often causes cramps: You could also eat bananas or drink coconut water which has enough potassium.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
