General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Breakthrough bleeding can occur with any contraceptive hormonal medication. It is one of the possible side effects. This is likely the reason for the brown discharge (old blood) and the light bleeding that you noticed. In most cases, it stops on its own but if it continues for a long period of time or it worsens significantly, then you can see your doctor for an assessment and treatment.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
