What Causes Mild Sore Throat, Pain And Cough?

I started getting a sore throat four days ago. It got bad - felt like my throat was on fire. It s still a little sore, but now I have a nasty cough and I ache. I don t believe I have a fever (at least, my thermometer did not indicate one). I guess this is a cold that I can just ride out. When should I be concerned about strep or an ear infection enough to see my doctor?
