What Causes Memory Loss While Suffering From Thyroid Dysfunction?

My son was sent to urgent care last week. He did not remember anything that had happened that day. his temperature was 94 and tests showed that his thryroid was low. He only weighs 125 lbs. and is 37 years old. Today he had an ultrasound done on his throid. I was diagnosed with underactive throid when I was in my 20s, but I had hair loss, greasy hair, weight loss, and I was lethargic all the time. What do you think could be his problem?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Low thyroid hormone mean that he is hypothyroid. He will need hormone replacement therapy (thyroid hormone) to bring up his levels.

Low levels of thyroid hormone can cause a wide array of symptoms including memory impairment and this may be the reason for his symptoms.

If he is having difficulty recalling events, it may be best for someone to accompany him to his doctor

I hope this helps
