Hi,
Age related degenerative changes occurs in the brain and loss of memory or dementia is common as people age.
Mini mental examination or item recall test can help in confirmation of dementia. It could be possible early Alzheimer's disease. Other causes of dementia also needs to be ruled out.
Alzheimer's could be progressive and result in cognitive impairment resulting in diminished mental capacity. As it progresses, he might not be able to manage even his daily activities. So it is serious, unless its ruled out.
As he is seventy, do get him evaluated and he can be started on specific medications.
Ask him to avoid driving or going out alone.

If you have any further queries, happy to help again.
