What Causes Low Platelets And Phosphorus Levels?
My daughter is in intensive care at Loma Linda Med. Ctr. in Calif. Her blood platelets are extremely low and her body is not replenishing them at a rate even near bottom line. Her phosphorus levels are lower than her doctor has ever seen. She is receiving vitiamns, potasium, and phosphorus through an IV but her body is not absorbing them. Doctors are baffieled ... do you have any ideas?

Platelets are made in the bone marrow similar to other cells in the blood. Platelets originate from megakaryocytes which are large cells found in the bone marrow. Thrombocytopenia is a lower than normal number of platelets in the blood. there are many causes of Thrombocytopenia as
Decreased platelet production due to Viral infections like in parvovirus, rubella,
mumps, varicella (chickenpox), hepatitis C, Epstein-Barr virus, and HIV.
Aplastic anemia
Long term alcohol can cause direct toxicity of the bone marrow.
Deficiency of vitamin B12 and folic acid can result in low platelet production by the bone marrow.
However in your case it is very difficult to come out as a cause as it can be a part of autoimmune disease like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or other autoimmune conditions etc
In my opinion you must consult you Hematologist for final diagnosis and treatment.
