Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I went to urgent care and they drew blood which took forever and he kept saying he must be hitting a wall. Then they came back and told me I had high wbc and low platelets (62,000) and high potassium. When I started questioning the results they drew another vial from the other arm and told me my potassium was fine. When I asked if they retested the platelets he said no and was referring me to a hematologist. I am scared and unsure of what to expect. Should I be concerned? What could be the cause of this as I have no bruising or uncontrolled bleeding.
Hello, I had gone through your query and understand your concern.
Low platelet count is caused by many conditions. To mention a few, viral infections, alcohol consumption, leukaemia, preganancy, septicaemia, thrmbocytopenic purpura etc.
I have seen cases with platelet count below 40000 and being treated with just i.v fluids.
Normally body will produce platelets to maintain normal level. So, don't worry.
Get yourself examined to know the reason for low platelet count.
Hope this helps.
If you have any other queries, feel free to ask. Regards, Dr.Prathap Kumar
