What Causes Low Hemoglobin Levels?

I ve had low hemoglobin for months requiring eight units of blood so far. Gastrointestinal tests have shown nothing. The hematologist says it s not caused by my not making hemoglobin but by some source of bleeding. Today I was told that sometimes multiple illnesses can cause anemia. Is this true?

Hello, Thanks for the query.
Anemia can occur due to multiple reasons is a fact. If there is constant blood loss as in a person with a bleeding stomach or duodenal ulcer, bleeding hemorrhoids (piles), worm infestations like hook worms etc these are causes related to gastrointestinal tract. In females excess blood loss due to menstrual problems also can lead to anemia. Inadequate nutritional intake, improper food also can lead to less formation of hemoglobin. So it is very difficult to pin point a specific cause. Apart from this many illnesses also result in inadequate nutrition or loss of nutrients. Therefore, it is quite true that anemia can be caused by multiple causes. Thanks.
