68 year old female. Normally excellent health. Exercise regularly. Great diet. But, today. I feel a little dizzy and a home blood pressure check shows low BP (103/66 with 65 pulse) when more normal readings for me are 123/83 with 74 pulse. Any potential concerns?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Deepti M's Response
Hello, You have mentioned that your home blood pressure check shows low blood pressure and that you feel dizzy. Do you have any other symptoms along with the above. If you have any other symptoms like chest pain or chest tightness ad shortness of breath, it can indicate heart attack (also called Myocardial infarction) also. If there are no other such symptoms, there is nothing to worry much about it. Also another important thing to be known is whether the low blood pressure is caused immediately after getting up from bed or suddenly shifting from lying to standing position. If it happens like that, it is called postural hypotension. Even if its simple low blood pressure without any serious causes or if its postural hypotension, just try to increase your fluid intake. Try to add a half teaspoon of salt and a spoon of sugar along with the water. Increased salt and fluid intake will normalize your blood pressure. Follow this for a day, about 4 to 5 times. Then again try to record your blood pressure next day. If still there is any problem, please go and visit your doctor for any further testing.
