What Causes Liver Enzymes To Increase In A Short Time?

Hi.I am a 27 year old female with a past medical history of hypothyroidsm ( Hashimoto). I am taking Levothyroxine and my levels of tsh always fluctuate. I am also 158lbs. And 61 inches classifying me as overweight. Most of my extra weight is in my abdominal area. In September 2015 my alt was 106 and ast 52. Three weeks later it was alt 149 and ast 82. I have cut out alcohol and have started to eat healthier. In particular drinking green tea and eating dark leafy greens. An ultrasound showed mild to moderate hepatomegaly and fatty liver. I am very concerned about the significant rise of alt and ast in the short period of 3 weeks. My tsh was also high so my doctor increased my dose. What could cause the increase in liver enzymes in such a short time frame? Thank you in advance.

Dr. Hanif warmly welcomes you with thanks for a consult!

I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I want to assure, I will take care all of your medical concerns according to the latest medical guidelines.

One important cause is the long term use of alcohol. It is not caused by the alcohol you are taking right now. It is older injury and has caused a significant damage to the liver tissue. You have fatty changes in liver and also there is increased size.

I also will suggest to see to check for your ALPHA FETOPROTEIN LEVELS as there are chances for the liver cancer (HCC) in chronic Alcoholic cirrhosis patients.

Some diets like mushroom amanita and Aflatoxin may cause significant liver injury and fast rise in liver enzymes.
