What Causes Knee Pain?

Hi, Ive been having knee pain for more than a month. It happened at work as I stepped out wrong from sitting behind a desk I must have sprained a knee muscle or nerve and it hurt pretty bad, made me limp with pain. I still hurt so much.Do I need to go to my PCP so I could be referred to the right doctor? Or is it just an arthritis case since I have arthritis on my hands, back and neck? I am 64 .

General Surgeon 's  Response
It is possible that you have sprained a knee ligament. It is also possible that you have sustained a meniscal injury of the knee. However, the basic treatment is to rest the knee till healing takes place. This may be about 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the degree of injury. It would be good if you could wear a knee brace which will to a good extent splint the knee joint and give it rest. If the pain persists, please consult an Orthopedic surgeon, who may also advise an MRI examination to diagnose the problem and treat it.
