What Causes Knee Pain?

On the side of my knee, sort of towards the back,is a stabbing pain when I put weight on it in a bent position. i.e. standing up from a chair. If Iput weight on it when it is straight, it hurts but not the stabbing pain. If it is swollen, it is very little. I have not recently fallen or strained it that I know of.
