What Causes Jerking While Being Asleep?

Hey. My body jerks me awake while I'm asleep. I doesn't happen right when I fall asleep. Its in the middle of me sleeping. Then sometimes I try to wake myself up But can't. It's like I can sense something standing near me and I try to wake up to see what it is but I can't. I try to move but I can't. I try to talk but I can't.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
hello there,
I went through you question. Well, the jerks that you get while you are asleep is known as myoclonic jerks which is a normal physiological phenomenon which many people experience. The second part of your question is also a biological phenomenon known as SLEEP PARALYSIS, which is also experienced many individuals. I occurs during the transition period between your sleep and wakefulness, the experience is usually frightening. One of the best way to come out of it is to try and scrunch your face or try to move your toe or try to clench your fists, these methods can break your sleep paralysis. If you are experiencing sleep paralysis very frequently it would be best to consult a neurologist or a psychiatrist.
