Hello. and I hope I can help you today.
You are correct that your girlfriend's symptoms may be due to friction, in which case the itching should go away on it's own.
However, there are other possibilities that can cause similar symptoms. If you used a condom for
contraception, many women have sensitivities to latex or to the ingredients in the
spermicide in a condom, and can get itching afterwards from that. In addition, spermicide can kill healthy bacteria in the vagina and lead to the development of a vaginal yeast infection, which also presents with itching.
Whatever the cause, your girlfriend can treat the itching by purchasing 1%
Hydrocortisone cream, which is used for itching on many parts of the body, and apply it to the itchy areas and the opening of the vagina twice daily. You also should abstain from intercourse until her symptoms have improved. If the symptoms do not resolve within a week, she may have developed a
vaginal infection and should see her gynecologist for evaluation.
I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
