What Causes Itchy Pus Filled Blisters On Foot With Pain?

About a month ago, I contracted what I believed to be a fungal infection on my foot, or athlete s foot. An itchy, red scaly rash formed between the two outer toes on my right foot. I bought an over the counter topical anti-fungal cream and used it for 2.5 weeks without any signs of improvement whatsoever (in fact it worsened). After this point I bought an over the counter antifungal powder spray, called Tinactin. I used this for two weeks and again, the infection only worsened. The infection has progressed to a point where I have extreme itchyness in combination with weeping blisters or sores that are mildly painful. My question: I went to a doctor today, she took a very brief (and seemingly disgusted) look at my foot. I told her I had used antifungals to no avail, and so she prescribed me Fucidin cream which contains hydrocortisone and fusidic acid, an antibiotic. She also prescribed me Cephalexin, an oral antibiotic. She didn t explain, but I am assuming she believes the infection is not in fact fungal but rather bacterial? Or that secondary bacterial infection has occurred? I am concerned that while the medications she prescribed me will help with a secondary bacterial infection, without antifungals the underlying tinea pedis will not ameliorate and may in fact worsen. What should I do?

Podiatrist 's  Response
Based off of your symptoms it does seem to be a fungal issue. Fungal infections can cause small painful water blisters to form. If it is getting worse I typically prescribe my patients a 3 week course of oral anti fungal medication. Lamisil 250mg pill. This usually clears up most of the infection in combination with a dual acting cream of antifungal and steroid cream mixture. You also have to address where the fungus is coming from. Most commonly fungus replicates and lives in your shoes and in the shower. At least once per week, pour bleach on your shower floor. Also once a week spray the inside of your shoes with any antifungal spray, similar to what they do at bowling alleys. This will help to kill the fungus that may be re infecting you from your shoes and shower. But definitely see a podiatrist or see if your primary doctor can prescribe you the antifungal pill.
