What Causes Itchy Ears And Flaky Skin Outside Ear Canal?

Hello, I v had a problem with itchy ears for the past 2 years. I have an urge to scratch the inside of the ear canal, but when I do, so it gets worse. I already saw 2 dermatologist, but once they examined my ear canal, they sad it looked normal. I have also used number of ointments such as hydrocortizol and one other which I can t recall, but they did not help. So, my condition was left untreated ( the inside and outside of the ear canal tends to have flaky skin which usually gets worse in winter months, but overall this condition is pretty much persistent throughout the rest of the year). About one moth ago, I came back from Mexico and in addition to itchy ears I started having itchy scalp and also my skin on certain parts of the body tends to itch ( back, arms & legs ). I am quite frightened what this might be, would you be able to provide me with any advice on what this might be or what kind of test should I ask my family doctor to send me for? Thank you, Eva

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Ear pain and itching might be because of excess wax depositions in ear canal or otitis media or labyrynthitis etc but needs to be evaluated further by clinical examination and various tests for which you should see ENT specialist rather than dermatologist.

Itching over scalp and other body areas could be due to fungal infection but I will need visual inspection at the itchy areas to come at conclusion.

Kindly consult dermatologist for itchy areas to diagnose properly.

You might require oral antibiotics (quinolones or cephalosporins group preferred),antifungal drgs with analgesics and antiinflammatory with other supportive treatment.

The important thing is to diagnose first means which problem causes repeated ear pain and itching in ear canal.

You must consult ENT and skin specialist for respective problems.

Regards,
