What Causes Irregular Menstruation In An Grown Woman?

Okay, I m a 22 year old woman and I ve never had sex with a man. I have had sex with one woman though. Therefore I do not have kids, nor have I ever been pregnant. My periods usually are pretty normal.. They come once a month, about the same time apart. They usually last about 4-7 days. The first day is light, the second day and third days kinda heavy (meaning I d probably go through 3 tampons the first day and 5 the second and third) then the remainder is light again. About five years ago, when I was a junior in high school, I went the entire year and never once had a period. That had never happened before, and it hasn t happened since. This time, my period is so bad that I m changing not only my tampon, but a pad and my clothes too, every 10-30 minutes. It started a few hours ago, around 5 pm maybe, (it s 3am now) and at first I was just changing my tampon every 30 minutes. Then after dinner (around 10) it started to get worse, and I d have to change my tampon every 10 minutes. Well I got into this movie I was watching and it didn t feel like I needed to go the bathroom until the movie was over and I got up. The moment I stood up it was like something gave way and I felt the blood soak my pants and run down my legs. (I m sorry if this is gross.. But it s 3am and I have no one else to ask and no one to take me to a hospital til morning) So I immediately get into the shower. Before I get in, I take the tampon out and it s like I m spilling a glass of liquid, there was a splash and the floor and me were covered in blood. I clean it up and get in and as I m rinsing off, blood clots keep falling out continuously. Big ones, small ones. The whole time I m in the shower, which is about 30-45 minutes. I even used a douche, which I never do, but I thought it might would help rinse some of it out. It did, and it was worse than my whole shower experience put together. I get out and put in a tampon, get dressed, and go sit on the end of my bed. Al of this takes maybe 5 minutes. I need to change my tampon again. Not only that, but when I get to the bathroom, I notice I have to change my clothes too, because even though I just put them on 5 minutes ago, they re soaked. So I get new clothes and a tampon and a pad. This time, I think, it will work. I put everything on and I go sit down. Within 5 more minutes I m changing the tampon, the pad, and my underwear. That was about 30 minutes ago. I don t feel like I need to change anything again just yet, but I m scared to move or go to sleep.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thank you for asking HCM
I have gone through your query. Hormonal imbalance or hypothyroidism can cause such irregularities in periods. So it is better to rule out hypothyroidism by doing thyroid profile test. Conditions causing hormonal imbalance like Polycystic ovarian disease and uterine abnormalities should be ruled out by doing Ultrasound examination also. A consultation with a Gyanecologist is well appreciated for this. By correcting such problems you can get a normal period back.
Hope this may help you. let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
