What Causes Involuntary Body Movement And Facial Contortion In Children?
Hello, my son woke up this morning with a weird rhythmic, rolling motion of his body, his face was contorted and he was a bit confused afterwards. he remembers everything. seizure was ruled out. could it be a night terror? what could cause that motion of his body and facial contortion.
there are many causes of involuntary body movements in children, One of them is dystonia. Dystonia results from abnormal functioning of basal ganglia, very deep part of brain which controls coordination movements. It could be tardive dyskinesia if your child has history of taking anti psychotic medication as this could be due to side effect of certain medication. anyway, referral to Child neurologist is recommended for futher follow up.
but your case is most likely, this is night terror, please make sure that your child is getting enough sleep daily and your child is not suffering from any kind of stress. Just make him calm positively, just reassurance is needed, therefore, you need not to worry about your child situation, avoid giving him caffeine as it cause sleep deprivation.
