What Causes Intermittent Spotting During Early Pregnancy?

I am currently 18 weeks pregnant with my second child. I have been spotting off and on (some bright red, some dark brown) since early in the pregnancy. At first it seemed to only be associated with intercourse but after ceasing the activity (at about 11 weeks) it has continued to be an issue. My OBGYN was not to concerned at first but at my 3rd visit decided to check my cervix, at which time I was told somthing was spotted on it. This was only explaint to me as perhaps a pre-existing condition or it could be somthing from my current pregnancy and we will be taking a keep an eye on it and see position. I just feel like I need more of an explaniation. Any insight would be helpful.

Hi,
Spotting throughout pregnancy is indeed abnormal. Possible causes are hormone insufficiency, hemorrhage in the membranes, polyps of the cervix, erosions of the cervix, infections of the vagina and cervix and urinary tract infections. A local examination, a speculum exam, a swab test of the vagina and cervix and a pap smear help to exclude local causes. A sonogram of the pelvis helps to exclude intra-uterine causes. If you need any more explanation, please contact me with reports. Hope this helps.
