What Causes Intermittent Chest Discomfort In An Elderly Person?

My 82 year old mother has been having intermittent chest issues that she says either feel like burning or icy cold. Episodes can last a short time or for up to 4 hours. There is no other associated pain or heart attack symptoms. They can occur while sleeping, as well as during the day. Stress test and cath test did not show any blockages or heart-related problems. While in the ER they provided a cocktail of Malox-type liquid and it did not provide any relief. Could anxiety/stress cause this type of feeling in her chest? There are some things going on in her life that are stressful and she is worrying about. She is otherwise quite healthy, exercises and does volunteer work at a hospital!
