What Causes Intense Itching When Suffering From Polymyalgia Rheumatica?

My 87 year old mother, usually in good general health and very active, was diagnosed yesterday with polymyalgia rheumatica. She also has very itch skin and a creeping feeling of her skin - all over. She has just today commenced on steroid medication - but this itchiness has been intense for a few days previous to this diagnosis and before any medication was given.
