What Causes Increase In The Size Of Uterine Wall?

I am a 56 year old woman who is postmenopausal. I started bleeding last year and an ultrasound showed my uterine wall was 7mm. The bleeding had stopped and the biopsy came back negative. I started bleeding this year, approx. a year later and found out the wall has increased to 15mm. I have had a biopsy but I m concerned by how fast this growth has become. IF not cancerous, should i just have my uterus removed so this problem will go away?

Hi,

When you mention uterine wall thick, it is not clear whether you refer to muscles of the uterus or the lining of the uterus (endometrium). However, after going through your history, it appears you mean endometrium. The fact that uterine wall in increasing in size suggests that the Oestrogen levels in your body are increasing (hyperoestrinism).

Hyperoestrinism leads to hypertrophy of the endometrium. At the age of 56, 15 mm endometrium is definitely an issue of concern. However, the biopsy has shown no cancer. So you can take a sigh of relief. Please get your hormonal profile (Oestrogen, Progesterone, FSH and LH) performed. Ultrasonography will help to find out any lesion or source in Ovaries also. The very fact that in your previous Ultrasonography, no mention about ovarian abnormality appears means that the ovaries are normal.

If no abnormality is detected, you can take one of the following decisions:

1. Wait and watch with regular follow up study of the endometrium by ultrasonography and biopsy if indicated.

2. Remove the uterus and the risk of any further cancerous development in the endometrium.

3. Opt for thermal ablation of the endometrium. In this procedure, the endometrium is burnt out with the use of boiling water. Whatever decision you take, it should be with appropriate counselling by your Gynecologist after complete investigations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Nishikant Shrotri
