What Causes Hyperthyroid?

I have had hypothyroidism for about 5 years and have been on synthroid medication (I know the amount). I stopped taking the medicine in April, something stupid I did & did not consult my doctor about this. During the summer I started feeling hot but did not think anything of it. I went for my blood test about 3 weeks ago & my doctor called me & said I was now Hyperthyroid; and gave me a sonogram of my throat. I am now waiting for an appointment with an endocrinologist. My Question is how can you be hypothyroid and then it turn into hyperthyroid?

Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understood your concern.
Whenever a person takes thyroxine supplements for hypothyroidism and if the dosage is high or it has been taken for longer time than it must had been taken then the thyroxine starts accumulating in body and thyroid.
Then the hypothyroidism converts to hyperthyroidism as thyroxine levels in body goes up.
To prevent this we regularly follow up with the patients to see the response of thyroxine supplements on the thyroid profile of the patient.
If it is getting corrected then we reduce the dose and by regularly checking thyroid study we come to a maintenance dose where the levels are optimum for the patient.
This is the reason for hypo going into hyperthyroidism.
Doing sonogram of thyroid to look for any other cause is the right approach to the current issue.
I hope I gave satisfactory answer to your query.
Thank you.
