Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.
I can understand your concern.
Hemoglobin level is normally high in the newborn period. It is higher than the adult level. Beyond a certain level it is called polycythemia and is not very good. There are several causes for the same. Small for gestational age and diabetes in the mother are some of the causes. If the value crosses certain level blood is removed from the body and replaced with equal volume of normal saline. If it is within certain range monitoring and increased feeding may suffice. Please consult your doctor if your baby is feeding poorly.
Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
