What Causes High Fever In A Child After Vaccination?
hi. my baby is nearly 17 months old. i live in uganda. i vaccinated him for yellow fever and three days later he got a high fever that lasted abt 24 hours. no other symptoms other than fever. after reading about the vaccine i am very scared that something may have gone wrong. can he actually get the virus from the vaccine?
Hello, thanks for asking on healthcaremagic. Yellow fever vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine. It means that it contains a weakened form of the virus. However it is not possible to get yellow fever from vaccine. Fever might occur as an immune response to the antigens in the vaccine. These antigens are proteins of the virus and they are responsible for immunity development. Remember vaccination is not a medicine or an antibiotic but a trigger to generate your own immunity against the disease. So fever can occur after most vaccinations. However it is generally not prolonged. You can give paracetamol drops to your baby. If fever is prolonged then you should consult your doctor to rule out another infection. Hope i answered your query, thanks.
