Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I recently had bloodwork done. I understand that a high white blood cell count can indicate infection. It seems to be something I'm hearing frequently when I have any routine bloodwork done. The count was 13.2. I'm having more bloodwork in 3 weeks (to check thyroid level after increasing medication), and the doctor said if it's still elevated, he's going to refer me to a hematologist. Is there reason for concern here? I feel like I'm becoming crazy with all this reading I'm doing.
Hello, Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern. Your white blood cell is elevated for their range. The causes of the elevated level are infections bacterial, viral; inflammatory condition as rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto disease; condition that have tissue death e.g. heart attack, trauma; allergies etc. For determine the cause of the elevated white blood cell you should do A culture to affected area for bacterial infection; tests for viral infection e.g. mononucleosis; Inflammation tests CPR, ESR; autoimmune disease ANA; allergy tests; T3 T4 and TSH for Hashimoto disease. Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
