Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I am 19 weeks pregnant and have just been re-reading through all my notes. I had a blood test at 10 weeks and whilst the midwife said everything was fine, I have just noticed by MCH is up 34.8 with the expected range quoted as 27-32. This has left me very worried as reading up on the internet this measurement should have been highlighted as an abnormal blood result (and suggest a B12 or Folic deficiency). I am worried what this means for my baby s development, and cannot understand how the midwife missed this. Please help, thank you.
Hi! I really appreciate your concern regarding high MCH. Generally, if the MCH level is over 34, this is considered to be too high. The main reason that the MCH level would be too high is because of macrocytic anemia. Macrocytic anemia is often caused by having too little vitamin B12 or folic acid in the body. You are advised to take green leafy vegetables, poultry, fish along with the multivitamin and iron supplements that are prescribed by your doctor during pregnancy. Hope it will correct your nutritional deficiencies and will bring back the high MCH to its normal level.
