What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding And Passing Of Clots?

I am 52 years old. I have continue to have a normal cycle... albeit heavy at times and over the past 10-15 years have suffered, depending on the month, from extremely heavy flow. This month I had my regular period and now it has been a week of extreme heavy clots. Everytime I go to the bathroom I pass another clot... size varies from quarter size to the size of a ping pong ball. Thoughts?? I have an appointment next Tuesday with my family doctor... should I go to emergency???

Hi,

Heavy periods are common in menopausal period. This is due to imbalance of the hormones. This can also be due to endometrial abnormalities like abnormal endometrial hyperplasia. You need to visit your gynecologist for review. Meanwhile few tests of the pelvis can be useful. Hormonal levels, Ultra sound, MRI or CT Scan of the pelvis can also be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
