What Causes Heart Palpitations?

I am 23-years old about 5' 6" and 151lbs. Healthy blood pressure and everything. I've been hearing my heart beat in the form of a squealing noise. I hear it mostly when laying down and it gets louder when my heart rate goes up. It scared me first time I heard it (about 1 year ago it started). I'm quite used to it now but I really don't understand why I'm hearing it. Why now all of the sudden? Why is this occurring with me and not with most other? Basically..... why? Thanks,MT.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern, and would like to explain that your symptoms don't seem to be related to any cardiac disorder (based on these symptoms and on the fact that you have no other symptoms).

Anxiety and hyper sensibility seem to be the causes of this clinical scenario.

It happens now, may be because you have not noticed before. It happens to many persons to notice their heart beat more during laying down position.

It is caused by the transmission of the heart beat to the diaphragm and the abdominal walls.

Nevertheless, I recommend consulting with a GP for a careful physical exam, a resting ECG and a chest x ray to exclude other possible causes.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
