What Causes Heart Palpitations On Lying Down?

I m curious as why when I lay down I start having heart palpitations, beating real hard and fast. So much so I lay there for hours trying to get to sleep. Once I stand up it starts getting better. Also when I first wake up I get a rush to my head and feel very warm. My email address is YYYY@YYYY Thank you for your assistances!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Palpitations can be due to different possible causes but most persons, understandably are concerned about possible heart disease.

Because your palpitations are occurring at rest, heart related cause is less likely because the heart tends to be stressed more with activity and works less when a person is at rest.
It would still have to be ruled out however with an ECG at least.

Other common causes are: (1) anemia - low hemoglobin levels (2) thyroid disease- high levels of thyroid hormone (3) side effect of medication (4)anxiety (5) infection and fever

In addition to the ECG, blood tests for thyroid hormone levels and a complete blood count (looking for anemia and infection), would need to be done as well.

If all the examination findings and blood tests are normal then anxiety would need to be considered.

I hope this helps
