Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 5 years old and today when falling asleep for his nap in the afternoon and now in the evening has short rapid breathing. He doesn t have fever, coughed few times today but doesn t seem ill. I m very worried because that is very unusual for him. Also the heart rate seems very fast but he said he felt fine. Should I take him to a doctor immediately? Thanks, Simona
In children, palpitations most of the time are not of an important cause. They just indicate the child just needs more care.
Make sure your son has eaten properly and is not frightened or stressed. Any drugs or herbals your son may have taken recently may have caused him the palpitation.
Being hydrated is important. Give to your son fluids on a regular basis to avoid health troubles.
As I am saying there is not a big thing to worry about. But if the symptoms keep being present in the following couple of days send him to doctor for further evaluation: get a full cardiac check up to rule out valvular problems and get a thyroid function test to rule out thyroid disorders.
Hope this was helpful. Dr.Albana
