What Causes Hearing Loss In Children?

my son is 10 year old and right from his birth he has severe cold and congestion. since past 1 month i have noticed that he is unable to hear properly. though initially i thought it was his lack of attention, i realised slowly that he has some problem in hearing. i consulted an ENT who prescribed montemac.L and some nasal spray. he also advised to go for adenoid and ear surgery. i was worried, its been 3 weeks and still unable to decide. i consulted other ENTs aswell and some say surgery is required and others say no. he still has the problem and last week he developed severe pain. pls suggest what to do. pls

Causes of hearing loss in children include either conductive or sensorineural type of hearing loss or mixed.Conductive hearing loss can be due to pathology in ear canal, eardrum, middle ear, eustachian tube dysfunction.Sensorineural neural hearing loss would be due to congenital defects in inner ear, hereditary, syndromes, infections like meningitis, drugs. As there is history of repeated episodes of colds, high chance of fluid in middle ear which can impair the conduction of sound and thus hearing loss.Enlarged adenoids also contributes to this condition.Initial work up includes audiometry (as child 10 yrs assumes that he will be cooperative)to know quantity and type of hearing loss.A tympanometry test can point towards a diagnosis of fluid in middle ear.Initial management with antihistamines, nasal steroids might relieve the condition.Latest guidelines enlist an observation period of 6 weeks for resolution of otitis media with effusion, then sugical therapy (tympanotomy with tube insertion with adenoidectomy)can be performed.
