What Causes Hallucinations While Suffering From Macular Degeneration?
My Mom is 96 years old and was in very good health for her age until last year when she fell and broke her arm and ankle. Her recovery was slow and since then she was diagnosed with blood clots in both lungs and a mass in each. She was put in hospice care at home in March and miraculously improved and was removed from hospice in June although she has 24/7 in home care and needs assistance to maneuver with her walker. The issue now is that she is seeing things that are not there. For the last 2 weeks she has seen a blue eye almost all the time and occasionally an arrangement of pink flowers. Now she sees different images of human heads. She says they are looking at her but never speak, and sometimes their eyes are closed ( she says they are sleeping). She says they don t scare her but it is unnerving because she is afraid she may be losing her mind. Her meds have not changed so it seems unlikely to be a reaction to anything she is taking. It may be good for you to know she has macular degeneration, in case that could somehow be a factor. Any consultation you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
The symptoms isn't related to macular degeneration (a a few related disease). The visual hallucinations are psychiatric in nature so it would be more useful to see a psychiatrist. At such ripe age hallucinations are not uncommon. Medicines and reassurance will be helpful. Regards to your mom.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks, Dr. Arihant Pandey
