What Causes Gonorrhea If The Partner Doesn T Have Any Symptoms?

Hi. I was recently diagnosed with cervicitis and after my results came back from a culture swab taken in ER I was told I had gonorrhea. I have only been sexually unprotected with my partner and I advise him to get treatment. Other than pelvic pain and abnormal discharge, I had no other symptoms and my partner has absolutely no symptoms. No burning, itching, pain during intercourse, nothing. So I am wondering If it is possible that I was misdiagnosed seeing as he shows no signs of an infection?

Hello dear user!

Yes, there are cases when one partner or both may be asymptomatic (especially men), even thought they are infected by a STD. They may have different symptoms that are not easily diagnosed, and they can be easily confused with other conditions. For example, women may have back pain, bleeding between periods, etc, instead of itching, discharge, pain or burning during urination, etc.

If you are not sure and doubtful about your diagnose, you can do that test again. It is important that the medication to be taken by both partners in the same time, and no sex or protected sex while on medication.
I suggest you to take the medication as it is prescribed by your doctor, talk with your partner for cooperating in this process.

Take care and I hope you will be fine!
Best regards!

I have understood your confusion and do appreciate it. Gonorrhoea usually causes pus discharge from the urinary passage and burning urination. However if the infection is not in acute phase, may not cause any symptoms. This is the tricky phase.

If you are diagnosed to have gonorrhoea, please complete the treatment as this infection can be completely cured by appropriate treatment.

Also insist on the investigations and complete treatment on your partner lest the risk of reinfection. Please do not go only on the absence of symptoms.

Gonorrhoea if not treated in time may lead to infertility due to blockage of tubes - in either of the or both the partners.

Also get your blood test done to rule out Syphilis as these two infections most of the times go hand in hand. Get this test done on both of you.

I hope you got the clear signal. Please get cured soon and stay cured for ever.
